Career: 1857-1861 at Harvard College; studies of natural history and chemistry at the Lawrence Scientific School in Cambridge; November 1861 commission as second lieutenant in the First Massachusetts Cavalry; participation in the Civil War during which he rose to the rank of major; 1865 resigned his command and reentered the Lawrence Scientific School; studies in comparative anatomy with Jeffries Wyman; 1866 M.A., 1868 M.D. from Harvard Medical School with a graduation thesis about the physiological action of potassium bromide; 1868-71 stay in Europe and studies with Claude Bernard, Louis-Antoine Ranvier, Étienne Jules Marey in Paris, with Wilhelm Kühne, with Max Schultze in Bonn, and with Carl Ludwig in Leipzig; 1871 assistant professor of physiology at Harvard Medical School; first teaching laboratory for physiology in the United States established; 1883-1893 dean of the Harvard Medical Faculty; co-founder of the American Physiological Society in 1887 and its second president in 1888; American editor of Michael Foster's Journal of Physiology; 1876 full professor of physiology at Harvard; 1903 first occupant of the George Higginson professorship of physiology; 1906 retirement; honorary degrees from the universities of Cambridge, Edinburgh, Toronto, Pennsylvania and Harvard.
