1901 scholarship to St. Mary´s Hospital Medical School, London University; 1906 Conjoint Board Diploma; 1908 gained M.B., B.S. with a gold medal from University of London; 1909 completed fellowship examinations of the Royal College of Surgeons of England; lecturer at St. Mary´s until 1914; served throughout World War I as a captain in the Army Medical Corps; 1918 return to St. Mary´s; 1921 assistant director of the Inoculation Department at the Royal College of Surgeons of England; 1928-48 professor of bacteriology, University of London; 1946-55 director of the Wright-Fleming-Institute; 1943 elected Fellow of the Royal Society and knighted in 1944; shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1945 with Ernst Boris Chain and Howard W. Florey for his discovery of penicillin in 1928. |
