Career: 1825-1827 studies of medicine at Edinburgh University; 1827 stay at Cambridge as a preparation to enter the Church of England as a clergyman; 1831 degree at Cambridge and invitation (instigated by Henslow) to join the Admiralty survey ship H.M.S. Beagle (under the command of Robert FitzRoy) as unpaid naturalist on a voyage to survey the coasts of Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego, Chile, and Peru, to visit some Pacific islands and to carry a chain of chronometrical stations around the world; 27 December 1831 start of the five year voyage on the Beagle; 1838 secretary of the Geological Society in London; from 1843 onward private lecturer at his estate in Downe; honorary doctorates from several foreign universities.
