Auenbrugger studied medicine in Vienna and worked as physician in the Spanisches Spital from 1751 until 1762. In 1762, he founded his own doctor’s office in Vienna and received the knighthood in 1784 from Emperor Kaiser Josef II. He is said to be the discoverer of the Perkussionsmethode, regarding the differences among acoustic noise when hitting the chest wall.
