From 1738 studies of theology and natural sciences at the universities of Halle and Jena; after completing his studies, private teacher and deputy headmaster; 1748 secretary and librarian to Count von Bünau at Nöthnitz; 1754 move to Dresden, 1755 to Rome; travel guide and librarian of the Vatican; 1763 appointment as President of Antiquities by the Pope, later secretary to Cardinal Albani; 1768 visit to Dresden and Vienna; murdered in Trieste on his return journey to Rome. |
