Career: 1754-1863 externe at the Collège Mazarin (under Lacaille and others); 1761 transfer to the Faculty of Law; 1763 baccalaureate in law; 1764 licentiate in law; 1763 and 1764 accompanied the botanist Bernard de Jussieu on his promenades philosophiques in the Paris region; participation in the course of chemistry by Guillaume François Rouelle at the Jardin du Roi; from 1764 onward at the Academy of Sciences (1764 aspirant, 1768 member,1772 associé chimiste, 1778 pensionnaire); travelling inspector of the Ferme Général, which collected indirect imposts for the government (such as the tax on tobacco and on salt); 1775 commissioner of the Royal Gunpowder Administration and residence in the Paris Arsenal; opening of a laboratory in the Arsenal; 1785-1789 collaboration with Claude Berthollet, Antoine de Fourcroy and Guyton de Morveau; 1789 co-editor of the newly founded Annales de chimie; 1791 Ferme Général abolished and Lavoisier removed from his post in the Gunpowder Administration; 8 May 1794 executed on the guillotine.
