Career: 1851 studies of medicine at the University of Tübingen, 1852 at the University of Heidelberg; assistant at a hospital; 1856 Dr. med. in Heidelberg; one semester at Berlin under Johannes Müller and Du Bois-Reymond; 1857 Privatdozent at Heidelberg; 1858-1863 assistant to Helmholtz; 1863 lectures on psychology; 1864 ausserordentlicher Professor; since 1867 lectures on "physiological psychology"; 1871 successor to Helmholtz at the University of Heidelberg; 1874 professor of inductive philosophy at Zurich; 1875-1917 professor of philosophy and experimental psychology at Leipzig; foundation of the Institute for Experimental Psychology.
