Career: 1845 entered medical school and was a student of physiologist Marie Jean Pierre Flourens; M.D. with a dissertation on the origin of the cranial nerves, University of Paris, 1853; ; 1856 discovered the Adrenaline; 1857 was appointed médecin des hôpitaux; 1860 - 1863 was Flourens' deputy as professor of physiology at the chair in the Museum for Natural History; 1862 Vulpian and Charcot took over the Hospital Salpêtrière; 1867 succeeded Cruveilhier as professor of pathological anatomy, University of Paris and was elected member of the Academy of Medicine; 1872 chair of experimental and comparative anatomy, University of Paris; 1875 dean of the faculty of medicine, same institution; 1876 member of the Academy of Sciences.
