Career: 1872 studied natural science, Universities of Breslau (Wroclaw) and Straßburg; 1874 in Breslau again; 1876 in Freiburg, Breisgau; 1878 M.D., University of Leipzig; 1878-1885 assistant at the Charité (under Frerichs), Berlin; 1887 habilitation, University of Berlin; 1889 Privatdozent at the faculty of medicine, Berlin; 1890 assistant of Robert Koch; 1891 associate professor, University of Berlin; 1896 director, Institute of serum research, Berlin; 1899 migrated the institute to Frankfurt am Main and became associate professor at the university there; 1904 honorary professor and 1914 tenured professor of experimental therapy, University of Frankfurt am Main; established chemotherapy as a tool to fight infectious diseases; 1906 director, Georg-Speyer-house of chemotherapy, Frankfurt am Main; 1908 Nobel Prize in Medicine; 1915 died from an apoplectic stroke, Bad Homburg, Germany.
